Yesterday we talked home décor and all-things-weddings with event designer and blogger Myka of Sitting in a Tree. Her San Francisco apartment is super cute, right?! The first time I met Myka at Rye I noticed her wedding ring, a blue topaz stone lined in diamonds. Yes, her lace vintage dress also caught my eye but it was her ring that convinced me she had style— the kind of cool girl style that mixes all the right things. We got an inside peek into her treasure trove of fashion pieces, a true blend of high and low labels. We're in love!Tori, the other half of Sitting in a Tree, gifted Myka a gold monogrammed block that she made especially for a girl's day out.
How would you describe your personal style?
Girly with an edgy, city vibe. I love ruffles, feathers, sequins, and pink but I like to pair it with a piece that’s slightly stronger: a frilly skirt with a spiky bracelet, a sequin dress with a grey menswear sweater, a lace white dress with a faux leather jacket.Left: It's no surprise that Myka's signature nail color is OPI's Lucky Lucky Lavendar. A day shopping with you goes something like...
I do a lot of thrift and consignment hunting. I love Crossroads Trading Co. on Filmore Street! I grew up thrift shopping with my mom— I am the type of person that will search for that perfect item on the racks for hours. I like mixing the high fashion with the low so I'll do some boutique shopping too. I tend to shop by myself a lot because my girlfriends don't last as long as I do!Left: A rhinestone headband from Forever 21 is repurposed as a pin. One of Myka's all-time favorite candles is Wild Blueberry Vanilla by Trish McEvoy which also happens to be her perfume of choice. Right: Myka's one-of-a-kind wedding ring.
Will you share the story of your wedding ring with us?
Ohhhh, the ring! Are you ready for this story? Ha! After ten years of dating, my husband Georges knew I was pretty particular when it comes to accessories. He told me he needed my help finding the perfect ring. We scoured vintage boutiques, antique stores, and jewelry shops; anywhere and everywhere to find a ring. I knew I wanted something different and loved the idea of a gemstone cocktail engagement ring. I came across a picture of a ring that I was in love with years ago. We quickly realized it was going to be a tough search. Most of the jewelry stores were filled with traditional diamond engagement rings and the rest were cheesy mc-cheese-a-lot gemstone rings. I knew I wanted a blue topaz stone. We ended up having the ring made. It was hands-down the best decision ever! We went to a wholesale jewelry mart and decided on a "loose" blue topaz stone. It was the exact color I had envisioned from the beginning and an emerald cut— perfect! The jeweler we spoke with completely got us. She was even wearing a ring that was very similar to the look I wanted. With her help my now hubby designed a setting to fit the stone. That was that.
It was so exciting to know that Georges and I would soon be engaged. And it was even more exciting to wait and see what the ring really looked like when he proposed. He asked me to marry him at our house on a random weeknight. It was beyond perfect. He had a hard time getting the words out because as soon as I realized what was about to happen, I was jumping up and down asking him a million questions, "What? The ring is done? When did you pick it up?!" It was so late at night that we didn't call anyone until the next day. I loved having that night alone, just the two of us knowing we were engaged. It was a happy, happy time.Above: An Anthropologie glass dish holds a J.Crew bracelet that Myka wore on her wedding day. "I like jewelry that is rocker-inspired with a hint of girly. The pearl and ribbon detailing soften this piece up." Left: A blush pink feather headband from Forever 21. "I think I'm inspired by Zooey Deschanel whenever I buy polka-dot dresses!" Myka says. She wears a Forever 21 blouse, H&M lace shorts, black tights from Target and Kimchi Blue metallic jazz shoes from Urban Outfitters.
You know we trust your good taste. Will you share some of your favorite San Francisco haunts? Solstice for wine, Dino’s for pizza, Crossroads Trading Co. for second-hand finds and Paper Source for all of my crafting needs."You'll die when I tell you where my gold watch is from— Target, $14.99! The best part is I get so many compliments on that bad boy!" Myka says. She is currently obsessed with confetti!
