Flea Market Style with One True Love Vintage Rental

One True love Vintage Rental was born out of a rather healthy addiction to thrift-shopping. It was only natural that we would become friends with the girl behind all of that vintage goodness! Amanda collects things: old things, pretty things, distressed things and quite useful things. She delights in incorporating all that she's scooped from flea markets and estate sales into any event, especially outdoor weddings.  She's amassed a well-curated inventory of vintage luggage, tufted velvet chairs, antique tables and rustic bottles and vessels to use in the space as you see fit! We caught up with her on one of her Sunday trips to the Alameda Antique Fair to spy her bevy of cool finds— from old typewriters to hardcover books and skeleton keys, it was a good day at the Flea.

When did your love for thrifting first begin?
My love for all things vintage began when I was very little. My grandma had a collection of amazing French antiques and I remember always being intrigued by her belongings. She had everything from costume jewelry to Louis Vuitton steamer trunks...oh how I wish I could have gotten my hands on those! Her house was like a treasure trove!

What found objects are you most attracted to?
I have a serious soft spot for anything with a little chipped paint or rust and objects that are rustic but romantic— think French country meets industrial. Primitive tables, tattered leather doctor bags, velvet upholstered chairs and settees, and metal locker units are just a few things that are making my heart go pitter patter these days.
What's your best resource for vintage and reclaimed furniture?
Alameda Antique Fair is by far the best local resource for vintage goods. You really can't beat having hundreds of sellers in one place at one time! The downside to big antique fairs like Alameda? They're only held once a month and in the winter there are often rain cancellations because they're held outside.
Best shopping advice?
Well, I don't want to give away all of my secrets but here are a few pointers for those of you venturing into the world of flea markets, antique fairs and estate sales.

1. Have a plan: It's so easy to get sidetracked when you're surrounded by a bunch of pretty things. I always make a list of my "must-buy" items of the day.

2. Do your research: If you're not familiar with the value of a particular item, do your research before handing over that cash. There's nothing worse than buying something and then seeing it sold for way cheaper just a few short feet away! How does one go about doing research at a flea market, you ask? Keep your eyes peeled for other vendors selling the same item. Compare prices. Voila! Research complete.

3. Don't rush into a decision: There's no such thing as a "return" at a flea market and you don't want to be stuck with buyer's remorse! And if you can't bear to walk away from the item and risk someone else snatching it up? Well, there's your answer!

4. Don't be afraid to haggle: Sellers at flea markets and antique fairs price their items knowing that people will try to bargain with them. Very rarely are they unwilling to budge. Try to work the price you want to pay— it's a lot easier than you think!

Lastly, what do you predict for summer wedding style?
Gorgeous outdoor lounge set-ups and lots of them! Many brides have been contacting me interested in using upholstered sofas and chairs for their outdoor receptions. They're looking to create comfortable but chic set-ups where guests can sip some cocktails and relax. I just love the idea of bringing furniture and decor that you'd typically see inside outside.
